MARTIN NEEDHAM
Meet the author
Martin Needham is a retired Brea Police Captain who now makes his home in Spokane, Washington. Before law enforcement, he trained as a pilot and ran his own trucking company, learning early the kind of discipline that would later carry him through life's hardest season. He is the author of Letters to Judy, a collection of the letters he wrote in real time while caring for his wife, Judy — his "Wife for Life" — through her battle with cancer, her final days in hospice, and the grief that followed. Framed as a 90-day journey through suffering, love, loss, and faith, the book is not a victory story but a witness: to a marriage that stayed when suffering asked for everything, a faith that remained, and a love that did not end when death came.

What my readers say
I leave the book with a need to be more gracious with myself, as God is. I cannot create the profundity of that truth in words.
Lisa G.
This book is not meant to be read in a hurry. It is rich with wisdom you can't get without experience. It is preparation for times ahead, whether they be sickness, loss, or daily battles.

Day 38, "I was surprised by how unromantic the moment that might have been 'the end' was...."
It was plain with nothing spectacular to add. That really struck me with how temporal out life is and how much unnecessary meaning we add to it.

This devotional is real, raw, and something I wish I had in the midst of losing my mother 3 years ago. This is not your typical grief-faith devo, this is real emotions in the moment that are so helpful, knowing that you are not alone and you are not crazy. As someone who has only experienced deep loss once, I needed this.
Camilla K.

This book is very emotional for me; it’s raw. I tend to be a compartmentalizer with emotions. This book made me unlock the door on my own experiences with grief and loss, which was scary, but the scripture and questions to the reader helped me work through those emotions to where they are more manageable.
Jenna H.

I feel like the book captured the whole range of emotions that come with serious illness. The fear of what is ahead, relief when a treatment appears to be working, and then sadness when it does not.
Donna S.

The book was deeply moving, and the author was able to put language to deep internal experiences.
I loved that the author didn’t need to defend God or God's own faith. It was raw. It was real, and it was authentic. That has been my own experience with grief and pain, and I appreciated the fact that he could be so real and not need to come across as having answers or sounding spiritual. Faith is very often dark and gritty, but it is real.
Jenny P.

Rather than providing easy answers, Marty reminds us that grief is a journey and that God's grace is sufficient even when the future feels uncertain. His story is a testimony to enduring love, faithful devotion, and the hope found in Christ.
